Meet Kenny Mintz

Early Years and Military Academy

Colonel Kenneth J. Mintz is originally from the North County of San Diego, California where he graduated from Fallbrook Union High School in 1987. Following graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1991, COL Mintz was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry and assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. From 1992 to 1995 COL Mintz served as a platoon leader and then a company executive officer in the 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the 3rd Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division.

Leadership and Deployment

Following promotion to Captain and graduation from the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, COL Mintz served in the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany. He deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1996 to serve as an Assistant Brigade S3, and then the Brigade Training Officer. COL Mintz next served as the company commander of C Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, and deployed again to Bosnia in 1997. Following his second operational deployment to Bosnia, COL Mintz next commanded Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2-6 IN.
Colonel Mintz was promoted to Major in 2002, and attended Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas from 2002-2003. Following graduation from CGSC, COL Mintz served four and a half years in the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York as a Division Planner, the Battalion Operations Officer for 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, and as the Brigade Operations Officer for the 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
COL Mintz deployed to Bagram Airbase, Afghanistan from 2003 to 2004 as a 10th Mountain Division planner assigned to Combined Joint Task Force 180; he also deployed to Iraq for 15 months serving in the Euphrates River Valley south of Baghdad from 2006 to 2007 as the 2nd Brigade Combat Team Operations Officer.
Within months of redeploying from Iraq, COL Mintz was assigned as the US Army Infantry Exchange Officer to the Australian School of Infantry at Lone Pine Barracks in Singleton, New South Wales. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 2008, and served two years in Australia before returning to Fort Drum in the Spring of 2010 to take command of 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment in the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division. Colonel Mintz led the Battalion through the train up and then a year-long deployment to Zharay District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan from 2011 to 2012.
From 2011 to 2012, Kenny Mintz commanded an infantry battalion in one of the most lethal sectors in Afghanistan. Charged to defeat enemy forces in this volatile region, Kenny led his unit to successfully subdue and pacify an enemy sanctuary. Through a series of operations, Kenny’s unit relentlessly pushed deeper and deeper into this sanctuary, and eventually isolated and drained the influence of a dedicated and vicious foe. He accomplished this with the capabilities of his unit, and in close partnership and support from Afghan forces, and local Afghan people.
These operations and the close alliance between disparate partners united in a common purpose was code named “Steel Lion.” These Steel Lion operations demonstrated the skillful application of teamwork, innovation, and the commitment to overcome all obstacles to achieve mission success. This is the inspiration behind Steel Lion LLC, and reflects the same core values and commitment displayed on the battlefield.

A New Mission: Walking Across America

Following retirement from the Army, COL (R) Mintz began planning and preparing for his next mission to walk across America. On 1 April 2022, he began his 3300-mile journey at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. After walking through 13 states and going through 8 pairs of shoes, he completed his walk at Swami’s Beach in Encinitas, CA on October 22nd.

Tribute and Legacy

The walk was inspired by his mom, who died of Pancreatic Cancer in 2020. She drove from Washington DC to San Diego in 1974 to start a new life with nothing but a four year old Kenny, a suitcase, and a dream. She eventually co-founded a successful defense contracting company in San Diego. COL (R) Mintz took care of his mom during her 5-and-a-half-year battle against this deadly cancer. He raised over $100K in support of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and two veterans-focused charities – the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund, and Operational Resiliency.

Life After the Walk

COL (R) Mintz currently resides in Carlisle, PA where he is preparing to write a book about his walk across America. He has four grown children: Ruth (27), Emma (25), Margaret (23), and Max (21).
